Biography

Derek comes to us from the garden city of Victoria, BC where he was born and raised. Growing up in a family separate from the Word of God, Derek was not introduced to Jesus until he was 14. Since the age of three Derek has participated in competitive sports including lacrosse, ice hockey, field hockey, soccer, figure skating, rowing, track & field, cross-country, and even curling. This helped him to establish his love for sports, especially hockey (which he still plays and coaches), which also paved the way for a career as a Physical Education teacher.
During his high school years, Derek was heavily involved in Video and Media Arts. His thought was to become a television Director but God had other plans for him. In his grade 12 year, Derek missed the scholarship application date to get into Ryerson Polytechnic. Instead, he spent the next two years in the mission fields of Scandinavia and the former Soviet Union with Christian Sports Outreach International, playing ice hockey and soccer. After returning from the mission field, Derek began coaching ‘AAA’ hockey for the Saanich Braves and working a variety of Full time jobs while serving as a youth pastor for his local church. Derek heard his calling to become a teacher when he was 25, after confirmation from his youth group students and hockey players. Graduating in 2003, Derek worked in the Victoria area as a substitute teacher and, most recently, teaching at Fort Nelson Secondary School in northeastern BC before moving to Calgary to teach at HCA.
Derek has helped expand the athletic options available to HCA students, coaching such sports as wrestling, x-country, floor hockey, badminton, soccer, and track & field. If you are curious to learn more about Derek, the best way is to invite him out for a round of golf or to a Junior or NHL hockey game!!
